Session 1: Facilitating Effective Communication and Support Between Brain Injury Advisory Councils and State Brain Injury Programs and Other State Agencies

The goal of these trainings is to cultivate interactions between people with lived experience and state agencies where everyone feels heard, validated, and accommodated. Participants will walk away with several strategies that can lead to successful communication between these parties with a focus on better supporting the needs of people with brain injury in advocacy. We encourage participants to join both webinars to hear the perspectives of both parties.

Session One: Empowering Advisory Councils

Focus: This session is focused on improving communication skills for advisory council members to ensure effective communication between the council and the state agency.

In our first session, NASHIA will focus on empowering advisory council members with essential communication skills. Individuals with lived experience will also be highlighted. Together, we will:

  • Gain an overview of the history and purpose of Brain Injury Advisory Councils.

  • Explore the structure of state government and the role of advisory councils within it.

  • Hear from individuals with lived experience and council leaders on effective storytelling and messaging.

  • Discover strategies to raise awareness of brain injury among state agencies through successful individual stories.

This session is designed to equip you with the tools to effectively engage with state agencies, ensuring your voice is impactful and heard.

Provided as part of NASHIA's engagement with the ACL Grassroots Project.
