Maximizing Resourcefulness: Extended Supported Employment Solutions Programs for People with Brain Injury

Mini-Results and Innovation in Systems Excellence

(Mini-RISE) e-Learning Community

Open only to Administration for Community Living (ACL) Grantees: TBI State Partnership Programs and State Protection & Advocacy Systems engaged in the PATBI program.

Supported employment is a service that helps individuals with disabilities find and maintain meaningful, competitive employment — with ongoing support and assistance as needed. The approach can be key for people with significant disabilities, such as brain injury, as they seek to engage in the workforce. “Long-term supports” serve as a supported employment sustainability strategy.

Many factors result in an individual receiving, or not receiving, paid, long-term supports after the provision of supported employment. These long-term supports, which are often referred to as “extended services”, are commonly associated with home and community-based services (HCBS) Medicaid waivers. A waiver recipient may not have supported employment services as an option on their waiver. Others may not qualify for waivers or may be on a waitlist. For those who require supported employment to attain and maintain employment, TBI State Partnership Programs and PATBI programs can engage in comprehensive solution-finding to mitigate long-term support gaps

This targeted technical assistance event will highlight the benefits of supported employment through HCBS waivers for people with disabilities and will also offer up pathways in the absence of traditional HCBS waiver routes. Strategies highlighted will include Ticket to Work (TtW) Employment Networks, utilization of work incentives with support from a Benefits Planner, and ABLE accounts. A state-funded model for long-term, extended services featuring Minnesota’s Extended Employment option will be shared.

Zoom details will be provided to accepted participants based on information provided in the registration form.
