Many individuals with spinal cord injury also have concomitant brain injury, and there are also many individuals with brain injury who have sustained varying degrees of paralysis. Join us for an informative webinar on organizations supporting individuals with paralysis and spinal cord injury and learn how to access resources and initiate partnerships between your program, the NPRC, and the SCIMS to collaborate on research and practice.
The National Paralysis Resource Center (NPRC), operated by the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, improves the quality of life for people living with paralysis through grants, information, and advocacy. The NPRC assists people as they navigate through the various stages of their recovery after the diagnosis of paralysis. Information Specialists are trained staff who help anyone — from newly paralyzed individuals and their family members to persons who have lived with paralysis and mobility impairments long-term.
The Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Model System, sponsored by the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR) through the Administration for Community Living, supports innovative projects and research in the delivery, demonstration, and evaluation of medical, rehabilitation, vocational and other services to meet the needs of individuals with SCI. NIDILRR currently coordinates 14 SCI Model Systems Center grants, national leaders in medical research and patient care, from the point of injury through rehabilitation and re-entry into full community life. Each SCI Model Systems Center contributes to the SCI National Data Center, participates in independent and collaborative research, and provides information and resources to individuals with SCI, their family and care givers, health care professionals and the general public.
Participants will learn:
· An overview of the National Paralysis Resource Center (NPRC) history, program, resources, training, local supports, both disability specific and related to secondary conditions.
· The work of the National SCI Statistical Center, the central resource for researchers and data collectors within the program and current studies. Information will also be shared regarding the SCI Model Systems and some of the resources with the Knowledge Translation Center.
· The overlap in issues with TBI and SCI, and some of the existing supports for service provision across both fields of practice.
